Return to Our Champions' Corner
Utah State Karate Championship and National Qualifier
June 2011 ~ Park City, UT

We had 15 competitors.
We took 20 medals total ! (not including participation medals)
8 Gold    5 Silver    7 Bronze

Please join me in congratulating our competitors! As usual, the kids did an excellent job. The few of them who did not place in medal matches were all in divisions above their skills and experiences levels because tournament administrators had to combine some divisions. For example, beginners and novices were combined in some cases although there is a big gap in skill levels (e.g. our white with yellow stripe, yellow with white stripes competing against orange, green, and even purple belts).

But as I have always told the kids, we prepare for and go to tournament mainly as a way to improve. Each tournament helps competitors to set new goals and push themselves. That counts more than any medals we can get. I would like to say congratulations to all the competitors.

I would like to make a special mention of the our little dragons and tigers who dominated a big group of 5 years old and under division:

  1. Aeddan Winter: 1st place Kata and Kumite (member of our regular competition team, and this year's Utah State champion of his division in both Kata - i.e. Form and Kumite - i.e. sparring).

  2. Josiah Barnett: 2nd place Kata, 3rd place Kumite

  3. Jack Safarti: 3rd Kata

  4. Ansel Flores: 3rd Kumite.
